The Summertime Saga download question is really two questions, because there are two live builds and they are not the same game. Pick the wrong one and you either finish the available content in an evening or you play a version that stopped getting updates in 2022.
The short version: take the Preview build if you want the game the team is working on now. Take Stable 0.20.16 for the most finished content in one install, or if you need a translation.
Everything below comes from summertimesaga.com/download. The game is free, funded through Patreon by Kompas Productions. Nobody needs to sell you a copy.
Stable v0.20.16. All content to date, standard definition art at 4:3, translations available, every mini game present. It is also slower to load, carries some input lag, and is no longer actively developed. Input lag is the gap between your tap and the game responding to it. Noticeable on older phones, harmless on a desktop.
Preview v21.0.0-wip.7944. The ongoing Tech Update. High definition art at 16:9, a bigger map, faster load times, fully hinted routes, accessibility options, quest conflict prevention. The tradeoff is limited content, limited audio, no translations yet and only some mini games rebuilt. The download page lists a late September ETA for the next update.
I would take the Preview build and check back after each update. The 4:3 art on a modern phone means black bars down both sides, and the new hint system removes most of the reason people go looking for a walkthrough.
There is no iOS build and no Play Store listing. Apple's publishing restrictions rule out the first, Google's adult content policy the second, so the Android build is a sideload by design. Sideloading means installing an APK directly instead of through a store.
Search results for this game are full of sites advertising a "mod APK" with unlocked scenes and a version number in the twenties. The official build is 21.0.0-wip.7944 and it is free, so there is nothing to unlock and nothing to pay for. What those repackaged files add is unknown code with full access to whatever you install it on. Skip them.
The developer publishes a SHA1 checksum next to every build. A checksum is a fingerprint of the file. If yours matches the site, the download arrived intact and unmodified.
Updating later: install the new APK over the top of the old one. Do not uninstall first. Uninstalling removes the app's private storage, and your saves go with it.
C:\Games\SummertimeSaga. Deep paths under Documents or OneDrive cause file length errors, and OneDrive will try to sync the whole asset folder.Apple made this harder in macOS Sequoia, so the old advice you will find on forums no longer works.
Control clicking and choosing Open stopped working in Sequoia. Apple documents the current flow in the Mac User Guide, including the fact that Open Anyway only appears for about an hour after the failed launch.
The Linux build ships inside the same archive as the Windows one.
unzip SummertimeSaga*.zipcd into the folder. You will see an EXE, an SH file and a lib directory.chmod +x *.sh./SummertimeSaga.shIf it exits immediately, run it from a terminal rather than a file manager so you can read the error. Missing SDL or GL libraries are the usual cause on a minimal install, and your package manager has them.
The game runs on Ren'Py, so desktop saves land in the engine's standard locations: %APPDATA%\RenPy on Windows, ~/Library/RenPy on macOS, ~/.renpy on Linux. Back that folder up before a major update and you can undo a bad one. On Android the saves sit in app private storage, which is why installing over the top matters.
Treat Stable and Preview as separate games. Do not count on a 0.20.16 save loading in the Tech Update build. Keep the old install where it is and put the new one in its own folder.
"App not installed" on Android. Almost always an incomplete download or a leftover copy signed with a different key. Download again, verify the SHA1, and remove any version from a non official source first.
Black screen on launch, desktop. Update your graphics driver. Ren'Py falls back to a software renderer when GL initialisation fails, and on some integrated chips it fails silently instead.
Crash to desktop with no window. Run the EXE or the SH from a terminal and read the traceback. It usually names a file that never finished extracting.
Stutter on Android. Close background apps and turn off any performance limiter your battery saver applies to sideloaded packages. The Preview build performs better than Stable here.
No audio in the Preview build. Expected. The Tech Update ships with limited audio while the engine work continues.
Verified against the official download page in September 2026: Stable v0.20.16 and Preview v21.0.0-wip.7944, on Android 13 and newer, Windows 10 and 11, macOS Sequoia and newer. Version numbers move, so confirm the build string on the page before following the steps above.
Want the most content and can live with 4:3 art and slower loads? Install Stable 0.20.16 and treat it as finished. Want the version still being built? Install Preview 21.0.0-wip.7944, accept a shorter run, come back after the next update.
Either way, get your Summertime Saga download from the developer's site and nowhere else. More Android install guides are on the ModFuze blog.
